May's Blog Post starts here:
Whenever I saw a western as a child I was drawn to the Native Americans. Their raw spirituality and connection to the earth was extremely attractive to me. I used to fantasize about living with them; leaving the city, living off the land and setting up a tepee with a hunky warrior. During my research for my western LASSOED LOVERS series I came across the story of Mary Jennison. Although her introduction to living with a tribe was under tragic circumstances, it seems she eventually found happiness staying with the Seneca's.
In 1758, on a spring morning in the Pennsylvania frontier, Mary, most of her family, and a number of British colonists were abducted by a raiding party comprised of French soldiers and a mixture of warriors from six Indians tribes. Mary was only 13. During their travels a pair of moccasins was placed on her feet and her life changed forever. Both of her parents were killed, along with many other colonists. Along with another young boy, the Seneca adopted Mary, renaming her Deh-he-wä-mis which meant, "... a pretty girl, a handsome girl, or a pleasant, good thing." ...She married a Delaware named Sheninjee. They had a son whom she named Thomas after her father. When her husband took ill and died while hunting, Mary was moved to clan relatives in New York. She eventually married Hiakatoo, a Seneca, and had six more children. Mary became a negotiator when the war ended. She lived the rest of her life with the Seneca Nation. She died at the age of 90. Her remains are located in Letchworth State Park, New York. A bronze statue marks her grave. Mary's life has been portrayed in several fictional books.
