Sugar and Spice: Or at Least 'the stuff reputable publishers are 'made of'

Last week, we discussed publishers that really need to turn off their lights and go home. Now, it’s time to discuss those that shine.

I hope many of you who emailed with recommendations for publishers will come out and give your publisher a little well deserved recognition. If you’re affiliated with a publisher you consider stand-out in the industry, let us know.

Today is your chance to give publishers from all genres some public praise. However, don’t just post and bolt. Stick around and tell us why you think they’re extraordinary. Do they pay on time? How long have they been in business? What about their line-up? Do they look like an author mill or are they selective? Either way, does it work for them?

Do you consider your publisher approachable and if not, why do you stay with them? What makes them exceptional even if they aren’t accessible? How about submissions? What is their response time after a manuscript is accepted for submissions?

What is the wait time for publication after your book has been accepted for submission? Talk about the edits and cover art department too. Finally, if you want to post information about sales, you're welcome to post and tell. Why does your publisher stands out?

Hi Destiny,

I love Aspen Mountain Press. They pay on time, the editors are top notch and a really good place to be as an author.

Another I work under my real name is Silver Publishing and Shadowfire Press. Both companies are fairly new but are growing in leaps and bounds. Great on paying and the staff behind the scenes are tremendous.

Ditto

I've been happy with Aspen Mountain Press also.

I just signed my first contract with XoXo so I can't be of much help in the paying on time but the staff has been excellent so far. And I am loving the experience of it all. I do have so many WIP that I want to submit but I am not sure if I should just go with the same publisher or branching out would be a good thing.

It's nice to know what publishers are treating our authors right! As a reader, I want to support the authors. When I spend my money, I am under the impression that it is benefitting the author who wrote the book, first and foremost. Reading is my number one hobby, I will buy a book before clothes, going out to eat, movies or any other activity. I would love to be able to write, but will have to stick to reading.

So thank you to all authors out there. I appreciate (and greatly enjoy) your hard work!

I'm with several different publishers under several dif pen names. All but one is wonderful to work with, answers my questions quickly, and pays on time.

As a reader, I want to say "Thank you for writing and publishing such wonderful books". If authors didn't spend alot of time, energy, and often times very real dollars making these books we wouldn't have a must have reads. So thanks to all the authors for their very hard work and great books.

As a reader I just want to say thank you to the authors for what they do to go through getting their works published. So that we the readers are able to enjoy their great books!

Xcite is good with the communication and author royalty statements are on time every month. I never have to chase anyone down to get a royalty statement or find out what's going on with my work.

As a reader, my favorite publishers are Samhain, Loose Id and Ellora's Cave. When I hear that an author and their publishing house is in conflict, I tend to back off from purchases there, while I wait for the dust to settle.

I'm a reader and tend to look at the web sites of certain publishers, just because I happen to know of them. There are a lot I've never heard of - It would be nice to have that info more wildly disseminated.

As a reader, I have to say Samhain Publishing is my favorite publisher. The cover art on the books published by Samhain Publishing is just gorgeous and I've never bought a book from them that I didn't enjoy.

Thank you, authors, for all the work you do to bring enjoyment into our lives! :)

I am glad that there are a lot of good publishers out there. It gives me confidence that when I purchase a book from one, the correct royalties are going to the authors.

As a reader, I look for great stories and professional editing. Attractive covers are a bonus which often are the first thing to grab my attention. But I also want to know that authors are being treated fairly. A few years ago there was a lot of chatter about some "Deadbeat" publishers and I stopped even visiting their websites. I'd rather send money directly to the authors than support a publisher who cheats them.

This was a very thought provoking post. I guess most of the time us readers do not think of how our authors are paid(or not paid) for their work. This gives us all something to ponder.

As a reader I want authors to sell so they will continue to write. When I know an author is happy with their publisher then I try to support the publisher so more magic can happen.

Diving in with my opinion on publishers here. I won't list any who I'm not pleased with. There are times when you just don't 'click' and when that happens, it's just time to move on.

But, my favorite publisher by far, is Total E-Bound. I make decent money, my royalties come on time, every time, edits are handled well and in a timely manner, and I've never had trouble getting in touch with the owner/publisher if I need to. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's been the best I've worked with up until now.

Oh, and my covers...Yum!

Hugs
