Release Blitz: The Painter is a Lady by Adriana Kraft

BLURB
Secrets. Trust. Courage. Who will knuckle under first—the war hero? The spirited single mom? Or the former high school bully who still hates them both?
When war hero Michael Jarvis returns to his hometown on the shores of Lake Superior, he doesn’t plan to stay—he’s undercover, investigating a possible sex trafficking ring operating on the Great Lakes. But he does want to sample the pesky girl next door he always turned down—and it wouldn’t hurt if she’d clear up a few mysteries of her own.
Successfully established as an interior house painter, Brenda Tower finally has her act together as a single mom—but it hangs by a thread, a secret she’ll guard with her life. The return of her youthful crush Michael Jarvis threatens to unravel everything.
Jealousy has inflamed Brett Hill’s hatred of Michael and Brenda for as long as he can remember. Revenge will be so sweet—and it will fit in perfectly with his high stakes game.
When the secrets break open, can Michael and Brenda find the courage to trust each other, or will revenge and betrayal triumph?

EXCERPT
Ignoring the catch in her voice, Brenda asked, “Did you really tell Tommy you’d help him with his pitching?”
Michael’s eyes lit up. “Ah, he remembered. I wasn’t sure he would. I did tell him once that if I moved back here, I might give him some tips.”
“Why?”
“Why?”
“Why did you even suggest such a thing? You obviously know the rumors. So does Tommy.” She gulped and curled her fingers into fists. “He thinks you’re his father. He wants you to be his father.”
Sitting back in the booth as if she’d slapped him, he eyed her cautiously. “And that’s my fault? I’ve only seen him a few times. When we did have that conversation, he was having a bad day. He’d been ragged on by his peers for throwing like a girl. He’d been crying, for God’s sake. I just stumbled into him near the park as he was coming home from school. He knew who I was. I knew who he was. So we talked. I didn’t think that was a crime.”
The pain on Michael’s face made Brenda wince. “I didn’t mean it that way. I doubt you’d do anything to hurt a little boy, but…but Tommy thinks you’re a hero. He’s eager to have you as a friend.”
Michael shrugged. “Sounds like the boy is more eager than his mother.”
“Damn. Do you have to twist everything I’m trying to say?” She clenched her fingers around the stein she’d hardly touched since sitting down.
“Sorry,” he said softly. “Maybe we could start over. You were going to tell me why you selected me as Tommy’s father. There must’ve been plenty of others to choose from.”
“That hurts.” She shook her head. “Don’t apologize. I deserved that. We both know I was quite active sexually before Tommy was born.” She shrugged. “You made the most sense. You weren’t around to protest, and folks in town thought we’d been together off and on since I reached puberty, anyway.”
“So much for folks in town.”
“Right. Anyway. I wasn’t going to leave that line on the birth certificate blank. You were convenient. You were out of the country. I imagine I thought you might never find out.” She fought back tears, remembering filling out the necessary forms two days after Tommy was born. “And you were my friend.”
“I won’t deny that. For all the misery you caused me, there were plenty of times you stood by me when the chips were down. So I was convenient.” Michael raked his fingers through his hair. “You can tell me it’s none of my business, but I have to ask. Do you know who is Tommy’s actual father?”
Brenda gulped for air, nodded, and ignored the tears suddenly brimming in her eyes. “Yes,” she squeaked. “But I won’t tell you.”
“I wasn’t asking you to, but at least I know you’re not just protecting Tommy―you’re also protecting his father.”

REVIEWS

Five stars at Amazon “Adriana Kraft has created memorable characters that linger long after the story has ended and I’ve closed the book. She has done what an author should--brought me into the book's world and made me care about the characters so that my world will not be the same as before their foray into it.” Sheila G.
Five stars at Goodreads “…dreams can become reality, love can transcend age… Exciting, engaging and very entertaining story. The character interplay is spot on and the story is extremely well written.” Donna H.

When the Chips are Down, There’s Nobody There

Daisy Matthews grew up on the streets of Chicago, and if she learned anything, it was that she could count on no one to help her, ever. She knows she has to tough it out, protect herself, and when necessary, protect anyone she cares about. All by herself. No one else will do it for her.
Hubs and I have loved writing Daisy and her story. We first introduced her in Cassie’s Hope (Riders Up, Book One) – she’s the teenage waif in the group home where Cassie worked before she went back to training horses. We’ve known so many kids like her across our social service and academic careers. There’s a special kind of resilience that comes from growing up that way; kids who don’t develop it probably don’t make it, and we’ve known some of those, too.
She doesn’t know who her father is. Her mother, who died of an overdose when Daisy was little, was a prostitute. Fortunately for Daisy, her rock-solid grandmother took her in, but that grandmother died when Daisy was eleven. Unadoptable for whatever reason, she ended up in a group home through her early teenage years, until Cassie and Clint Travers became her foster parents.
We’ve dedicated this book to two of our ancestors who faced severe social stigma more than a century ago: my great grandfather, who was born to an unmarried teenage logging camp cook in the Pennsylvania mountains, and hubby’s great grandmother, a quarter-blood Cherokee in an era when the family tried to hide that information out of shame.
Maybe we gave Daisy an extra boost when we paired her with a handsome wealthy hunk in his early forties, but we think she deserves a bang-up happy ending for her determination, grit, and courage in the face of present day social stigma. We hope you’ll agree.

EXCERPT

“I won’t let anything hurt you.” Daisy Matthews finished wrapping the ankles of the chestnut mare and sat back on her haunches to evaluate her work. The mare’s ankles were cooler than they had been two hours earlier.
It wasn’t easy to convince a horse to stand in buckets of ice, but after three years of being a groom and an exercise rider, she could do it about as well as anybody at Arlington Park. At least that was what her boss said when he promoted her to assistant trainer.
Daisy grinned. There wasn’t much prestige associated with being an assistant trainer for a fellow with a string of only twenty-some claimers and allowance horses, but it was something, particularly for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks.
RainbowBlaze took a step forward. “I know.” Daisy groaned. “Step one: pay attention. Sorry, I got lost daydreaming.You’re right. Taking care of you is an important job.” She chuckled. “I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing.”
“Hey kid, do you always talk to horses?”
The horse reared and pawed. “It’s okay, girl.” Daisy kept her voice soft and ran her hand slowly along the mare’s neck.
When the mare had stopped trembling, Daisy stepped out of the stall, shaded her eyes from the sun and faced the interloper. She scowled at the man’s new sneakers, monogrammed shirt and neatly pressed slacks. He looked liked he’d be more at home on a sailboat than in a barn.

Release Day Blitz for Special Guest Adriana Kraft!

It's my great pleasure to welcome Adriana Kraft to my blog today! Adrianna has a new release I know you're going to love. Put your hands together for Adriana Kraft!

The Heist
July, 2014
B&B Publishing
ASIN:  B00LNE7366
Romantic Suspense, 81,000 words
Heat rating: Three Flames (Warnings: explicit sex, m/f; light bdsm; sex toys)

BLURB

A heist? A murder? It’s villain’s choice.

A special-order art theft? Tedious, but seamless – until small town museum director Kara Daniels calls in the experts. Furious her favorite trio of priceless impressionist paintings has been stolen from its traveling exhibit on her watch, Kara is determined to save not only the paintings, but her future in the art world. She’ll stop at nothing to entrap the thief.

Ted Springs knows the underbelly of the criminal world a little closer than he might like—but he’s turned it to good advantage, first as a police officer, and now as detective for the Upper Midwest Arts Council. His job? To guarantee the security of the valuable paintings in the Council’s traveling exhibits.

Heat sizzles when Ted and Kara collide—can they work together, before it’s too late?

EXCERPT

“I and my staff have already done fairly thorough background checks on all the museum employees,” Ted said.
“Oh.” Kara scowled. “I’m not sure I like that.”
“But you expected it?”
“Of course. At some point.”
“I believe in being efficient. Even before certain added incentives.”
“I can always change my mind. I don’t know a thing about you.”
“You know enough. I have large hands.” Ted chuckled when she winced. “I’ve worked for the Upper Midwest Arts Council for five years.”
“And before that?”
“I was a Chicago cop.”
“Oh.”
“I went into the army right out of high school and completed my BA degree at U.I.C. while on the force. Funny, isn’t it? While you were working on your MA at the University of Chicago, I was patrolling the streets of Hyde Park and South Chicago.”
“Really?”
“That’s right.”
“Maybe we bumped into each other.”
“I highly doubt that. I wouldn’t forget bumping into you. Remember?”
“Oh, right.” Kara’s flush returned.

Planning a heist

Our latest release, The Heist, got its start on a rainy Monday a while back, when hubs and I attended a behind-the-scenes tour at our small Iowa town’s exquisite art museum. A new exhibit was about to open, and we were treated to detailed descriptions of the process of locating and ordering traveling exhibits, shipping them, storing them, uncrating them, hanging them, insuring their safety, and repacking them.

You must know by now that hubs is a criminologist  by profession. It didn’t take us long to be looking for vulnerable spots in the museum’s process, and by the end of the day, with a little internet research on the high stakes world of stolen paintings, we had our basic plot sketched out.

Our next problem was—what painting should be stolen? Clearly, we couldn’t go with an existing well-known piece of art. We opted to create The Three Maids, an entirely fictional trio of medium sized Impressionist portraits, based on what we knew about Monet, Manet, Renoir, Caillebotte, and the women they painted. We’ve put so much detail into the paintings’ descriptions that I keep expecting to see them when I enter an Impressionist display. If no one has painted them yet, I definitely think someone should!

I’ll leave the details of how the actual heist was planned, carried out, and (we hope) foiled for readers to discover—we hope you enjoy reading The Heist as much as we enjoyed creating it!

Guest Post and Spotlight on Author Adriana Kraft

Today, I'm excited to welcome fellow eXtasy Books author Adriana Kraft.
I asked Adriana to stop by and tell us more about Aria Returns which releases today
 from eXtasy Books!

The blog is all yours, Adriana! Welcome!

~~~~~
Have you ever written a character who seeps into your soul and just won’t let you go? That’s what happened with Aria, the love goddess my husband and I created (or discovered, perhaps) nearly a decade ago. She’s so real to us we keep expecting her to pop in the door, or materialize from the northern lights, the way she did in her first book.
What’s an author to do? We did the only thing we could think of – we let her tell us her next adventure, we put it on the page, and it’s coming to you this Wednesday, May 1, from Extasy Books. We think you’ll like it.
Aria’s original adventure, Colors of the Night, was the first erotic romance my husband and I wrote together, when we were just starting our fiction career.
A love triangle with a dazzling immortal goddess – will it ignite or extinguish the dying embers of a contemporary couple’s love?
It was released to rave reviews in 2006 – and promptly went off the market when that e-pub tanked. We were thrilled to have Extasy re-release it in 2009 when our rights were returned to us. But Aria wasn’t finished with us – she’s persistent that way, apparently. This time, instead of rekindling fires between partners in an existing relationship, she’s called on for some very tender healing:
Can the immortal love goddess Aria heal not one but two traumatized hearts—and if she succeeds, will those hearts open to each other?
Aria Returns
BLURB
Traumatized by the boyfriend from hell, Amber Heath makes a desperate plea for help—and is shocked when the immortal love goddess Aria materializes and whisks her away to a nineteenth century Carnivale.
Jeff Conway is still reeling from his fiancé’s betrayal and not about to risk his heart. But he’s more than willing to play with the spunky sprite Aria brings to meet him at Carnivale.
Sometimes watching, sometimes joining in, and always coaching, Aria launches Amber and Jeff on an erotic journey back to health and playfulness. But even the love goddess can’t force them to love each other.
EXCERPT:
"You've seen me play softball?” Amber asked.
Aria laughed. "Of course. I pride myself on doing my homework before taking on a situation."
"A situation. I'm not sure I like being a situation."
Aria shrugged. "Maybe we can come up with a better word. I sometimes do struggle with your language and concepts. But you called specifically for my help. Usually, I have to surprise people. I've selected them before they know it. Because of your aunt, you selected me before I knew you."
"But you could've rejected me—my situation."
"I could've," Aria acknowledged, "but I didn't."
"Why?"
"Because you believed and you cried. Tears tell me a lot. You were crying not only for yourself—for your past—but most importantly for your future. I can help you prepare for your future—if you trust me enough."
Amber frowned. "You don't know the future?"
Aria shook her head.
Sighing, Amber said, "No guarantees."
"No guarantees." Aria folded her hands in her lap. "I can help you make some discoveries about yourself, about life, but I cannot make you change, or make you love, or make anyone else love you."
"Then why should I trust you?"
Aria shrugged. "You've been battered, worse than you even know. You have a vague awareness of that, but you haven't accepted it, not really. I believe for you to understand yourself, you must flee this place and your boyfriend."
"You want me to go away with you, like Jamie and Ryan did."
"I'm offering you that opportunity. I believe a change of environment and time may prove very healthy for you, but only you can choose."
"What about Frank?"
"For now, he won't even know you're gone. Let me explain, little one. If you agree to travel with me to another time and reality, there is no comparable time lapse in this time." She arched an eyebrow. "Besides, I thought your boyfriend wasn't coming back tonight. He's saving you for breakfast."
"Fat chance of that happening." Amber fought the bile rising in her throat at the thought of where Frank might be at the moment. She sat up straighter. "How long do I have to decide?"
Aria shrugged a shoulder. "Until your boyfriend gets back, I suppose."
"You don't call him by name."
"He doesn't deserve to be called by name."
Amber winced.
"All the decisions are yours, Amber. But if you ask me a question, I will not lie to you." Aria squeezed her knee. "And if you're wondering if I'm here to help you and your boyfriend like I did with your aunt and uncle, let me be very clear. I am not. I only help people who want to change, or at least have some hope of changing. Your current boyfriend is beyond hope. If you want me to help you fix things up with him, I will leave right now. I'd never consider letting vermin like that touch me."
"I see." Dejected, Amber studied her toes. "But is that the same as making a decision for me—rejecting Frank?"
Aria shook her head. "If you decide you want to travel with me for awhile to experience new possibilities, and when we're finished you still want to come back to this man, then that is your choice. I won't and can't stop that from happening."
