Special Guest on Schedule: Jacci DeVera and Queen of the Hollow

“Queen of the Hollow”
So what’s going on here?

To have taken so long to come to light, “Queen of the Hollow” is short. Really short. Too long to be flash fiction, not long enough for novella status. I wanted it to be longer, I truly did, but sometimes you just have to let the story make the decision. Actually - and please don't tell anyone - especially my publisher - but that’s what I always do. The stories and the characters make my decisions for me.

Plotter? Pantser? If forced into a corner, I’d have to go with Pantser, hands down. Excel spreadsheets and I have a hate-hate relationship. I looked into various and sundry approaches for story-telling like free form, balloon, spider webbing and even the snowflake method, but I finally had to come up with my own description I call Char-Lab (pronounced “care lab” for you obsessive articulators out there), and stands for “character collaboration.”

Which pretty well sums it up. I collaborate with my characters on what happens next. I will may have an idea or The Situation, and then I’ll find a character in my head who lends herself to this idea, and then I put the character and all her friends into The Situation. The characters either go and do things, or talk through things, and I generally just listen. I may have an idea of where a story needs to go, or how it needs to end, but the really good stories never end up where I thought they would when I started.

Whenever the end of the book looms, then I might have to tie aforementioned characters down so I can get to The End. Because they are normally not real happy about that. And really, who can blame them? The End usually means, well, the end for those characters. They continue living in an endless loop within the pages and never get to adventure beyond that single tale, or experience growing in other directions. So I promised them I would try to have “Queen of the Hollow” the first book in a series. We took a vote and decided we all really liked the name High Lonesome for the series. It also happens to be the (fictional) West Virginian town in which their stories take place.

Below is the blurb and a short Excerpt from it. (A short excerpt for a short story.) I hope you enjoy!

~*~

Calla is a young shifter, the only female within miles of High Lonesome, her small town in southern West Virginia. Her mother has managed to keep her safe from the bounty of mountain lion males in their hills, but now Calla finds herself alone, without a protector, and the moon is full.

Haben hasn’t been able to get close to Calla since their meeting right around Valentine’s Day a year before. When he shows up at her house, he finds the wounded spit-fire determined for him to keep his distance - despite his instinct to keep her safe.

Calla has to trust an outsider in Haben or fight off every male mountain lion between here and Charleston with just her wits and a shotgun. With sheer numbers against her, the stakes are higher than she knows. And when the fight is over, she has to face the last cat standing as he succumbs to the raging Heat himself.

~*~

Excerpt
She wouldn’t lie down. She told him she had no idea if she’d be able to get back up or not. Which was true. But she wouldn't put herself in that position of submission with a tom here so close and her in her Heat cycle. That was just asking for trouble.
He kept his attention on her injuries, on wrapping them securely, on looking for her a crutch or a cane to help get up the stairs. She focused on his eyes and his lips. His eyes were the most beautiful she’d ever seen. They’d been dark brown in the store. Here they were the color of creamy caramel and it made her heart beat in her ears every time they met her gaze. His lips were dark and shaped with a stern current underneath, which looked positively suckable when he bit the bottom one in concentration. She wondered if maybe God had made them so dark so his teeth would shine all the more white when they flashed a quick smile. She bet his teeth were long and sharp when he shifted.

Release Blitz: Something Else by Nia Farrell

Welcome Nia Farrell, a Dark Hollows Press author with a brand new release!

Out Now! - Something Else by Nia Farrell

BLURB:  Grace Murphy is the local psychic medium who dreams of her soulmates –Nico White, a bisexual American Indian musician, and J.T. Santiago, an ex-Navy SEAL and former cage fighter with PTSD on top of the guilt that he’s still carrying from other lifetimes that they’ve shared.  J.T. is a dominant, but he’s never had a male submissive and Grace and Nico are a package deal.  It’s a learning curve for all of them, with J.T.’s initiation into MMF and MM relations and Grace’s introduction to BDSM.  With Grace’s yin, J.T’s yang, and Nico’s center balance, the three of them come together as far as J.T.’s PTSD will allow, but forging a future means healing the past, however painful it might be, in an interracial paranormal MMF ménage BDSM erotic romance.

EXCERPT:

With the appearance of him, I feel the shift in my own energy, like he’s a generator crystal that’s amplified every sense, common or otherwise. My zipped perceptions are razor sharp, dead on accurate, and delivered with lightning speed. When half hour readings go to twenty minutes, I start giving discounts and the line never ends, not until the ten minute warning that the fair doors will be closing soon.
At five p.m., one of the New Age shop assistants starts walking the aisles, clearing the crowd and the room’s energy with a ringing pair of Tibetan tingshas. I smile my thanks when she manages to herd the last hopeful from my queue. Smile bigger yet when I see that my Latino angel has returned.
“Hi,” I say, sounding rather shy for someone who’s had no problem all day, delving deep into other people’s lives and issues.
His lips tuck upward, and he nods his head toward the back of the room. “I promised my cousin I’d help her. Lena says it’ll take an hour.”
Lena. Pretty face, rocking body, bedroom hair, tats. Amazing silver jewelry and unique leather goods. “I like her.” Actually, I envy her. I have gifts, but Lena has the skills to make her visions a reality. It’s what sets her stuff apart.
“She’s got to get home. Sick kid,” he explains. “Daddy’s challenged enough when Ariana’s a healthy two-year-old. I’ll be free once Lena’s on the road. Will you be around? I can meet you somewhere. We could grab a bite to eat. Talk. If not tonight, then later.”
Déjà vu. Six months ago, I’d said nearly the same things to Nico.
I suggest O’Toole’s, two blocks east. “Do you know it?”
He nods grudgingly, clearly not a fan of the Irish pub. Sensitive to his inner turmoil, I offer an alternative. “Or Jerry’s?” It’s a local bar and grill, edgier than sports and just shy of biker bar.
God, his smile. I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven.
“Jerry’s,” he says. “In an hour or so.”
I’m still processing when Nico comes to check on me. He’s moved our vending van and already has his stuff loaded, and I’ve done almost squat.
“Hey.” He touches me, sliding his darker fingers up my ivory arms until they reach my elbows. When his thumbs start rubbing circles in the bend of each arm, my root chakra kicks into overdrive, and my fucking knees grow weak.
“He’s here,” I whisper, damn close to trembling. “He’s meeting us at Jerry’s after six. Help me pack so we can go get a table.”
That time of night, on a Saturday, there’s usually a line out the door one or two blocks long. I know I have spiritual helping hands at work when we get there and are seated at a booth in the quieter back with only a fifteen minute wait.
I’ve said nothing more to Nico about Lena’s cousin. It occurs to me that I never asked and he never offered his name. We’ll all know each other soon enough, and way beyond a first-name basis.
Just thinking about what’s coming makes my panties wet enough to stick my dress to the worn wooden bench beneath me.
Our waitress, Cherry, slides coasters on the table and sets down our drinks, a bottle of pseudo beer for Nico and a glass of orange juice for me. I don’t want anything, either brewed from nature or crafted in a chemistry lab, to dull my senses tonight. No alcohol. No soda. Juice and water it is.
A menu sits to my right, waiting for him to show. Across from me, Nico scans both sides of the laminated page and sets it down, his decision already made. I take longer, wrestling with my baser meat-loving self when I know I should shun it, but really, where’s the fun in that? I turned vegan once in high school. It lasted all of two weeks, but I stayed quasi-vegetarian for three years. Dairy, eggs, and seafood gave me the protein I craved, but it took cutting out the warm blooded meat to raise my vibration and get it to where I needed it to be. Because that’s when the dreams started. Visions of the past lives we’ve shared. Memories of the three of us.
Poised on the brink of our next go-round, I have to wonder why we keep coming back like this, like frigging musketeers. Is it because we’re stronger together, or dysfunctional apart? Jesus, I’d like to think I don’t need them, but I know how much more, how much stronger I am since meeting Nico. My body thrums to think of what it will be like to have both of them with me.
In me.
Fuck.

Release Week Blitz: Danielle Summers and Kissing the Golem

Monsters of all shapes and sizes are storming the scene in erotic romance and some of the creatures, like the one below, are racing to the top of the bestseller lists.

I invited Danielle Summers to stop by today and tell us about her
latest monster erotic romance, Kissing the Golem
Welcome Danielle!

Kissing the Golem

Jacob and Marcus, an interracial interfaith couple, are fighting about everything: coming out, monogamy and marriage. Then one dark night, they encounter the Golem who has protected Jacob’s family for generations. The giant but handsome man made of clay and dirt saves their lives, and his kiss just may save their relationship.

Excerpt

Marcus cupped Jacob’s face in his hands. He kissed Jacob on the lips and then pulled away.

“I can’t do this anymore,” said Marcus. “I love you too much. I love myself too much.”

He flung open the car door and ran.

“Oh shit,” Jacob said as he turned off the car and took the keys out of the ignition. He ran after Marcus yelling his name. Marcus was strong with smooth pec muscles and thighs that could crack walnuts, but Jacob was faster. He was lean and quick. He caught up with Marcus a few blocks off the main gay strip that they had been driving down. They could hear the occasional prideful whoop and holler, but, for the most part, the spot where Jacob caught up with Marcus was quiet and isolated.

“Marcus, wait!”

Marcus turned to face Jacob. Sweat covered his brow. “I’ve been waiting, Jacob. I’ve been waiting for you to come out. I’ve been waiting for you to say to someone besides me that I am your boyfriend. I’ve been waiting for you to be at least willing to discuss monogamy. I’m tired of waiting.”

Jacob would think after the fact that he should have heard the footsteps. He should have heard the first time the men who attacked them call them, “cocksucking faggots.” Gay pride events were bigger and more common than ever, but they were also easy targets for gay bashers looking for queers who had strayed from the party. He was too busy staring into Marcus’ eyes trying to figure out what to say. He wanted to stay with him. He didn’t want their relationship to end like this. It seemed like Marcus had seen them but didn’t know what to do.

Jacob felt a kick at the back of his knee, and he went down on all fours. He felt gravel dig into his hands and knees. Then someone hit his head. He heard voices and looked up to see someone punching Marcus. Jacob had no idea what to do. He didn’t know how to fight. He’d never been in a fight before. The one time he had been mugged, he just gave the guys his wallet and everyone walked away. He was poorer, but everyone was uninjured. He did the only things he could do. He tried to protect himself from the blows, and he prayed. Then he remembered Great Uncle Saul’s advice from earlier that day. He didn’t believe in the Golem, but he started yelling his name.
The gentle breeze that had been stirring got stronger every time Jacob said the word, Golem. Dirt and rocks started to swirl around them. The dirt started to draw in water, whatever was nearby. It sucked up a tiny puddle left over from a small rainfall the day before. It emptied a nearby bird bath. There was a crack of thunder, even though the sky was clear. The guys who had been hitting Jacob and Marcus stopped. The dirt got so thick that Jacob couldn’t see anything.

“Marcus!” he yelled.

And slowly the wind calmed down and the dirt settled. He looked up and saw Marcus standing there alone. The men who had been beating them were gone. Jacob didn’t know where. It looked like there was going to be quite the bruise on Marcus’ cheek. And next to Marcus was a man, but not just any man. He towered over Marcus by a couple of feet. His arms and legs were thick and shapeless. His face had tiny specks marking what might have been eyes, a nose and a mouth on anyone else. His most distinctive marking were Hebrew letters spelling out the word “truth” on his forehead. He was the suggestion of a man, and Jacob recognized him from drawings in picture books and the tales told around summer camp bonfires. This suggestion of a man was the Golem.

At Sloan’s manor, the men are informed of an impending attack against both the Clurichauns and the Leprechauns by a vicious tribe known as the Woodwose. The only way they can win a battle against the woodwose is to stand together. Now they must convince their clans of that!

EXCERPT
Berta was nervous. She stood on the porch and stared out at the pitch dark night. Living in the farmhouse in the middle of nowhere with her Leprechaun lover had been pure bliss for the past three months.

The Clurichauns, who’d beaten Reghan and had abandoned their pursuit only when Berta’s dog and a team of coyotes had driven them away, had left Berta and Reghan in peace once their leader had realized Berta was carrying Reghan’s child. Every day the couple had grown more in love, and every day she’d learned something new and wonderful about her lover. But now Reghan’s father had sent word that a delegation was on its way to get them and bring them home.

The screen door creaked and then clicked shut as Reghan stepped onto the porch behind Berta. He slid his strong arms around her slightly bulging middle. He brushed aside her long blonde hair and kissed her neck. “My parents aren’t ogres, you know.” His voice was a low rumble vibrating against her skin.

“Are there such things as ogres?” “There are…but there aren’t many in these parts…not anymore,” he said.

“But there were?” Berta still couldn’t quite make herself believe that Reghan’s being a Leprechaun wasn’t just some elaborate hoax. When he spoke of other “mythical” beings so offhandedly, she didn’t know what to think.

Reghan didn’t look like she’d have imagined a Leprechaun to look. He wasn’t a tiny little man with a green top hat, buckles on his shoes, and a pot of gold in his hand. In fact, he was a rather large man with dark red hair, bright blue eyes, and a neatly-trimmed beard. His handsome face and chiseled body might’ve made some women think he was a demi-god, but Berta doubted anyone’s—at least, any human woman’s—first thought upon seeing Reghan would be, “Hey, look! A Leprechaun!”

“Don’t try to change the subject,” Reghan murmured against her neck. “You have nothing to fear from my parents.”

“What if they don’t like me?” she asked, for what had to be the hundredth time.

“They’ll love you.” He turned her to face him. “Now come back to bed and make love to me again before the delegation arrives.”

“A delegation,” Berta said. “The very fact that they’re sending a delegation to get us terrifies me.”

Reghan tilted her chin up. “You worry too much.”

Excerpt

The final jangled slam of the iron bars as they locked into place made Manson Angola into a dead-level believer.

His mama wasn’t going to yell for him in the morning to tell him breakfast was ready and waiting on him in the kitchen. His daddy wouldn’t be lying on the sofa sleeping off a good drunk—or if he was, Manson wouldn’t know about it.

Oh no, first thing tomorrow morning, Manson wouldn’t stumble down his home’s rickety front stairs and grumble about another day’s work in a hot-as-hell factory. He’d stand at these very bars, holding fast to steel rods and staring across the short way at the man in the cell across from him, the one glaring back at him now. Given the look on the fellow’s face, they wouldn’t be any closer to becoming friends then than they were at that very moment. In fact, it was probably a good idea if he didn’t pass along goodnight sentiments or tell him to sleep well.

“Thirty years to life, son.” The man behind him finally spoke. “And it ain’t any better today than it was the first night I strolled into this hell hole.” After he released a smoker’s cough and cleared his throat, he added, “Name’s Benson. What’s yours, kid?”

Manson narrowed his eyes on the fellow across from him, not at all unaware of the way he slowly dragged the tip of his tongue across his upper lip. He stroked the texture nice and easy, made a real show out of tonguing his mouth, while Manson stood there gawking like a man with nothing else better to do.

Fact of the matter was, he didn’t have anything else better to do.

“Might wanna leave Tiger alone, son. Been here going on thirty-six months and I ain’t ever seen him do anybody any favors, if you know what I mean.” The old man kept right on rambling. “He’s a dangerous kind, too. Stay away from him is what I say.”

Manson tore his gaze away from the beast of a man who was still standing there stroking his lip like it had a specific flavor, one he apparently savored. By then, he’d started hissing, too, like a reptile might.

Taking a few short steps to the beds, Manson tossed his belongings onto the overhead bunk. He looked around the small cell. A dirty toilet marked its place in a dark corner. Located right above the wide sink, metal slabs served as shelves, both of which were next to a deeply set frosted-glass window with enough of a concrete enclosure to serve as a seat. The window didn’t open. Even if it had, there would’ve been bars on the other side.

“I like the bottom.” The old guy peered up and shot him a toothy smile. “Most of the guys in Cell Block D, which is where we are as a matter of fact, prefer the top.” He laughed, gave Manson a good once-over, and lifted a paperback book away from his chest. “You’ll find that out soon enough I imagine.”

“I prefer the bottom, too,” Manson said, speaking to his cellmate for the first time.

“Don’t tell me,” Benson said, giving a sharp nod at the bars. “Tiger’s the one who’d be interested in that sort of information. Me? I got me a woman at home.”

Realizing what the old guy was insinuating, Manson stepped on the end of his mattress and hoisted himself to the top bunk. He’d meant to negotiate for the lower bed but given the title of the book in the old man’s hand—Self Pleasure for Inmates—and the nearby Vaseline jar, he opted for the bunk above in hopes he’d at least sleep on clean sheets.

“Never told me your name, kid.”

“Manson.” He might as well get the questions out of the way tonight. “Manson Angola.”

The rickety-rack of springs popping and squeaking resounded as the old man scrambled to his feet. “Did you say Manson Angola?” His brows furrowed and twitched. His lips trembled.

“I did.” Manson threw his pillow behind his head and studied the ceiling, wondering how long it would take before this fellow would start screaming until his blasted lungs collapsed. That’s what had happened in the county jail. No one wanted to be locked up with a serial killer, particularly one accused of the most heinous crimes to have ever been committed in the United States.

“Well I’ll be damned,” the old man said. “I guess the warden finally decided to do it. Huh?”

Manson shifted to his right shoulder. He rolled away from his cellmate and faced the dull grey wall.

“I may be old, but I can give you a good fight, son. If the warden thought he’d send you in here to off me and it would be a neat and clean death, he should’ve studied my file for a bit longer. Back in the day I was an aggressive fighter, a pretty good one at that. You might get the best of me in the end, but you won’t walk away without a scratch, boy. Ya hear me?”

Manson yawned. He was sick and tired of these bad asses telling him how they could give him a good brawl.

“Go to sleep Benson!” someone yelled.

“Lights out!” another inmate hollered.

The old man never budged. “You may be doing some hard time, kid, but I ain’t afraid of—”

Manson flipped over, grabbed Benson by the throat, and pulled him halfway to the upper bunk. All the color drained from his face as he started whimpering like a baby, just a doggone child.

“Hard time is exactly what I’m doing, old man, so you and I need to get a few things straight. I ain’t here to be your top or somebody else’s bottom. I’m not here because the warden sent me or because some drug lord wants you dead before mornin’. Fact is, I’m here because I was tried in a court of law—same as you I guess—and a jury of my peers convicted me on forty-two counts of murder.” He tried to flash a downright evil smile, a smile he hadn’t realized he possessed until a newspaper reporter dubbed him as the man with the most “diabolical” grin. “And so you know, that was in the first trial. I was also tried and convicted of a few charges down in Mississippi, a state I’ll later visit if I somehow manage to serve out my first life sentence here.

“So you see, Benson, I’m not exactly the friendly type. If I were you, I’d request a cellmate change first thing tomorrow. Until then, sleep with one eye open. From what I hear, I’m a very dangerous man.”
