Release Blitz for The Miss Fortune Series: The Stiletto Scandal (Kindle Worlds Novella)

New +Amazon.com Kindle Worlds

Most people call their local law enforcement agencies when a dead body appears in their yard, but in Sinful, Louisiana? Folks turn to the Geritol Mafia.

Gators, local bad guys, and contract killers keep former CIA agent Fortune Redding on edge but with trustworthy sidekicks and an impossible deputy in her corner, what could go wrong?

The Miss Fortune Series: The Stiletto Scandal (Kindle Worlds Novella) by [Blake, Riley]

Unlikely Suspects…

When a former Sinful resident turns up dead in Fortune Redding’s backyard, Deputy Carter LeBlanc springs into action, but Fortune can’t help but wonder about his motives. Is he afraid a killer will strike again and she’ll become the next victim or is he trying to keep her away from the new man in town?

Motivated Killers…

Now considered an assassin-in-hiding thanks to an unfortunate stiletto scandal, Fortune has a nice price on her head and unlikely hitmen are in the killing game. With a borrowed identity and new place to call home, Fortune soon discovers Sinful isn’t as it seems. Since her Louisiana arrival, the former agent has been involved in one murder investigation right after the next. And things are about to get a lot worse for Fortune and a few of her closest friends.

Excerpt

Dragging tail wasn’t an option.
As soon as I spotted the floater, I tossed aside my binoculars, wiggled my toes into a double layer of warm fuzzy socks—compliments of my good friend Ally—and hurriedly grabbed a tacky pair of wading boots, recently purchased from Walter at the local general store.
After a minute’s worth of hobbles, boots were in place and I was raring to go. First stop, my kitchen table. Scooping up the barely-charged cell phone, I punched Gertie’s contact number and waited. Under normal circumstances, Ida Belle would’ve been the logical first call, but it wasn’t quite six yet. She probably hadn’t unrolled her hair curlers, much less made it out of bed.
“What and where?” Gertie asked. A simple “hello” wasn’t dramatic enough.
Fueling her enthusiasm for mysterious happenings, I said, “My house. Down by the bayou. Emergency meeting. Call it.”
Until the others arrived, I needed to figure out how to secure a body. It wouldn’t be an easy feat thanks to fast-moving rapids. After recent storms, the bayou swirled with the muddiest swamp waters I’d ever seen, not that I was a professional slough-watcher, but I paid close attention to my backyard.
Thanks to a recent dead body discovered there, my place was somewhat of a landmark. Jeanine from Sinful Sightings even pointed it out on her haunted ghost tours, which was disconcerting when I stopped to think about it. With a body count now standing at two and only a couple of months in residency, I was beginning to think that the Louisiana Bayou wasn’t exactly the safest place to lay low and hide.
I entered the back shed, steps away from the slight incline leading to the bayou. Second stop—a supply-gathering mission.
Thanks to the former homeowner Marge Boudreaux, I’d soon have my hands wrapped around a few body-fishing supplies. Marge and I were kindred spirits, but we never officially met.
Prior to my arrival in Sinful, Marge went on to a better place. Since the Baptist women often said as much, I assumed they meant heaven. Then again, any place beyond Sinful’s city lines might have been considered a ‘better’ place.
At present, I was in Sinful hiding from those who wanted my head on a spike. In order to avoid a painful end, I assumed the identity of Marge’s niece, Sandy-Sue Morrow.
As I rummaged through Marge’s dilapidated shed, I thought of how she might handle towing a body from the bayou. The outbuilding housed an assortment of items that a former CIA assassin could use on the job. Not that I was in the mood to kill, but it was always helpful to have access to the necessary tools of the trade. Goals and situations could change on a dime out here in bayou towns.
As luck would have it, I was about to accept the role of a fisherwoman. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be casting nets in an effort to catch lobster or crab. Tucking rope under my arm and holding fast to garden supplies, I gave Marge two-thumbs up and hurried to the swamp.
From where I stood, the mission was already set in stone, or rather leaning against a cypress. The poor guy had seen better days. Gunk, also known as bog moss, covered his face. A five o’clock shadow and cold, set eyes were barely visible. I couldn’t tell much about his external characteristics. Locals might be able to identify him if I could save him before he became gator bait.
Shuddering at the thought, I secured the coiled rope against my shoulder and fastened a good grip around the shovel handle. It was the same shovel that I often used to carry wandering frogs back to the bayou. My stomach lurched at the thought of employing the same frog-toting tool to fetch a man. In these parts, women often used extreme measures to reel in a fellow, or so I’d been told. Maybe the old saying derived from situations such as these.
Pushing aside local folklore, I focused on the deceased. With limited resources and a fear of alligators, I wasn’t exactly jumping up and down to save a dead guy. If only Ida Belle were here. I could hand off the rope and see if she had any experience lassoing a corpse.
Walter came to mind. If he stood as living proof, Ida Belle possessed ability but lacked practice.
In any case, until my elderly companions showed up to lend a helping hand, digging was the best course of action, assuming this fellow’s feet were planted in shallow waters. Fortunately, I had a close relationship with this shovel which basically meant I knew how to use it.
Curving my fingers around the wide handle, I cast the triangular end into the water and scooped up the fellow’s heel. Unable to budge it, I opted to go deep and aim for the arch. Maybe I could lift his foot then hook a knee and drag the body to shore. After fruitless attempts, I stepped back and studied the subject.
A crane might do the trick.
If Gertie and company didn’t arrive shortly, I could always phone a friend with connections. Since I didn’t have a lot of those, I’d probably buzz Walter. He knew people and could probably locate a hoist, but he was also Deputy Carter LeBlanc’s uncle. An alerted Walter meant Carter would know about the incident before I had a chance to drag the man ashore and search for some identification.
Glancing back at the house that had become my Louisiana home, I debated on whether or not my Jeep—Marge’s jalopy—would prove useful in this situation. It was four-wheel drive. Muddy wheels slipping and sliding wouldn’t present a problem.
Then again, I was a DC girl. What did I know about mudding in the bayou? The cowgirl’s rope came to mind once more. What were my options? What was I supposed to do first? Tie off at the dead guy’s neck? If the wrong person saw what I was doing, they might jump to conclusions.
The last thing I needed was to look like an accessory after the fact, if a crime had been committed. Based on an early assessment and my record for stumbling upon bodies, foul play was a given.
Catching movement in my periphery, I slung the shovel over my shoulder and prepared to assault any alligator that dared an approach. On a positive note, the victim didn’t seem too concerned about undesirable critters. On a negative one, I didn’t want to deal with said critters. I rather liked the idea of keeping all limbs attached.
Returning focus to the man in the mud, I made an assessment: Five foot eleven. Maybe a tad taller—or shorter—hard to tell in potty-like waters. Five o’clock shadow—or was that… “Ugh.” I couldn’t think about it. Ice-blue eyes, much like a killer’s. I’d met a few in my time. Well over two hundred pounds. Threat level zero, unless his ghost loitered nearby and then we might have a problem.
He wore a noticeable frown which was to be expected. Dead guys generally didn’t have anything to smile about.
Given his present circumstances, I’d frown too if I had someone like yours truly trying to save my corpse for the coroner. I hadn’t exactly taken care of this poor guy’s body. My goal was to fish it out of the swamp before a gator came along and left behind bits of flesh and slivers of muscle.
So far, things weren’t going as well as planned.
“Fortune! Where are you?” Gertie’s voice rang out like a trumpet.
As weird as it seemed, given my professional training, I heaved a sigh of relief. The Calvary had arrived.

Saturday Scenes from Mystical Christmas--The Vampire Diaries at Kindle Worlds

Excerpt:

“Ah, there you are.” Klaus greeted her with a warm smile which was almost an oxymoron.
Klaus represented everything Elena had grown to hate—despair, danger, and that emptiness she felt inside, the lonely existence she’d begun to recognize as life after Stefan. Klaus symbolized darkness, a darkness she might have otherwise accepted if he hadn’t stood so firmly before her as the gatekeeper, the one creature standing in front of Stefan and deliberately keeping them apart.
“I’ll be right there,” she snapped, tucking her journal under the mattress.
“I’ll wait with you.” Klaus snatched Elena’s floral garment bag and draped it over his arm. “It would be a real shame if you backed out at the last minute, Elena. You wanted a Christmas wish and your wish was granted.”
 “With certain terms.”
“Ah yes.” Klaus tilted his head one way or another. “Well I’ve never been one to greet demands with open arms. Besides, we’ll all feel better on neutral ground.”
“And why is that?” Elena had spent the last few days questioning everything and everyone. When she’d asked Klaus to release Stefan for the holidays, she hadn’t thought about the terms and conditions, the possibility of bargaining with the devil.
“We all play by my rules, Elena. You still won, sweetheart. You wanted Stefan for the holidays. He’s yours.” Klaus approached her with speed and narrowed his eyes as if he planned to compel her.
She quickly dismissed the thought. Klaus didn’t need her under his spell. She was his human blood bank, a walking natural resource for his hybrid nation. Outside of his need for her blood, he had little use for her, which brought her back to another question. “When I asked you to grant Stefan a holiday weekend, why did you agree to a break?”
“You always surprise me, Elena. More often I’m merely amused by your requests.” He tilted her chin and his head at the same time, looking at her as if he were indeed perplexed. “When you asked for Stefan’s release so you could celebrate Christmas with both Salvatore brothers, I was curious.”
“Which explains why you’re going with us to Tennessee?”
He moistened his lips and for a split second, Elena could’ve sworn his mouth was dripping in blood. She cringed as a memory crawled through her head. Her mind’s eyes flickered with newspaper clippings about a rampant killing spree, a murderous binge controlled by Klaus and executed by Stefan.
“I’ve always loved the mountains.” Klaus grinned. “Besides, holidays are monumental. We can build memories together. Why would I throw away such an opportunity?”
“You promised to release him while we’re in Tennessee.”
“And I will,” Klaus assured her. “Once we’re settled in and before the sun goes down.”
“Is there a ‘but’ in there somewhere?”
“All right, Elena, you win. I’ll let you in on a little secret.” His demeanor changed then. “You can’t play with fate or run from it, love. Katerina tried and as you saw for yourself, she failed on numerous occasions. She also loved two brothers as you love two brothers.”
 “I never said—”
Klaus held up his hand. “Let me finish. Damon gives you what you need, what you must have at any cost. Stefan, on the other hand, gives you what you want—the ability to stay committed to your high moral standards. The Stefan you know gives you a normal relationship, an acceptable bond. Your friends like him. Your teachers accept him.”
“What about the Stefan you know?”
“The Stefan I know would rip your pretty little neck apart if I so much as compelled him to do so.”
She swallowed, processing. Klaus wanted to hurt her. He wanted to watch how she interacted with the Salvatore brothers. He would then later use what he learned against her. “You made Stefan into something he’s not.”
“On the contrary,” Klaus said. “We’re vampires. That makes us hunters or predators by nature. We’re only killers by choice.”
“Stefan wouldn’t have done any of this if you hadn’t compelled him.”
“That’s where you’re wrong,” Klaus said. “I can hand an average man a gun, beat him within an inch of his life, and he will not pull the trigger if he isn’t a killer. The survival instinct, some of us have it and some of us don’t, Elena.”
 “That’s a terrible comparison.”
Klaus shrugged. “Maybe you’re right. Besides, Stefan’s weapons are embedded in his gums. No one hands him anything. He takes what he wants.”
“At one time he wanted me.”
“Yes and we all watched in horror as he became this henpecked vampire following you up and down the local high school’s halls. It was dreadfully painful to observe. Sad, really. At least now Stefan is his own person.”
Elena inched forward, anger driving each of her steps. “What’s sad is you really believe that.” She mustered up the courage to close the last bit of distance between them. “Now tell me, Klaus. Why are you really here?”
Klaus gripped her shoulders. “Let me remind you, sweetheart. You weren’t supposed to spend Christmas with Stefan. Word travels fast in our circles. From what I hear, you and another Salvatore have more in common. Then again, some might argue—at least those who have witnessed your volatile relationship—you and Damon probably weren’t supposed to spend Christmas together. You aren’t exactly an ideal mistletoe-seeking pair.”
“So you want to go with us and what…referee?”
“Hmm. I hadn’t thought of it like that, but sure. Think of me as the middle ground.”
“Ha! You want Elena to see you as a mediator?” Damon entered the bedroom cautiously. He watched Elena as if he were afraid to take his eyes off her. After her heart fluttered a few extra beats, he grinned—because he likely picked up on the fact—and turned to Klaus. “Well?”
“How do you want her to see me, Damon?”
“That’s a no-brainer. As the monster you are.”

Spotlight on 2015 Releases: Ravenous

Ravenous-A Vampire Diaries at Kindle Worlds Novella

“So you’re the family pet.” Katherine struck a pose and cocked her head. Layers of dark brown hair tumbled down her back. Her brown eyes twinkled with mischief but Gage wasn’t easily fooled. Behind the impish smile and cocksure attitude lived a woman with a reputation among the worst.

Katherine Pierce, also known as Katerina Petrova, had lived for well over five hundred years. Some would argue that she had wasted the better part of her time on earth marking her place in history by behaving badly.

“And you must be the legendary Katherine.” Gage resisted the urge to tell her that she’d become quite legendary. After her death, there had been rampant jokes about the former Mikaelson lapdog. One minute she was running from her masters. The next, she was doing tricks to please them.

Elijah, from what Gage had been told, was the one who kept her in line. Klaus, on the other hand, chased her away with threats of death. Apparently that didn’t last long. From what Gage had been told, Katherine had been on the run for more than two-thirds of her life. Klaus, apparently, didn’t dwell on trying to find her.

“I was surprised to hear from you,” Katherine said, dragging her fingers across the back of his sofa.

“You were probably more surprised to learn that Klaus has another brother.”

“I knew about you.” She brushed her palms against the backs of the cushions. “What I want to know is how I ended up here and why you think I can help you.”

Gage studied her suspiciously then, wondering if Katherine realized she had been dead for several years. She didn’t look disoriented or act as if she had just taken her first steps beyond the grave. “We can help one another.” He hadn’t known she would reappear on the outskirts of Mystic Falls, but he had bumped into her in town nonetheless. Considering how it had happened, he considered their connection a real gift.

“We all want something in life, Katherine. I’m willing to give you what you want if you’ll do the same for me.”

She laughed and it was then when Gage paid closer attention to her empty gaze, certain then that any and all emotions wouldn’t quite reach their more telling spot in her eyes. Perhaps there was a lot to be said about lost souls and those who had already visited their final resting place.

“You haven’t spent a lot of time with the Mikaelsons or else you would know that most people tend to steer clear of Klaus and his siblings when they hear the word help. Those who know them best understand that help means, they need something and can use the one they’ve approached.”

“I’m not a Mikaelson.”

“You’re Klaus’s brother.”

“We share the same father. The Mikaelson problems were inherited from their lunatic of a mother.” He let her think about that before he added, “Isn’t she the one who turned them into monsters?”

“She is the one who started this all,” Katherine agreed. “But never kid yourself. Esther was following through on Mikael’s demands.” She shivered then as if Mikael’s name alone brought with it an unprecedented amount of fear.

Surprised by her act, and certain it was an act given where she’d been, Gage asked, “Will you work with me or not?”

“It depends.” She pranced around the luxuriously appointed room, seemingly distant as she studied the expensive furnishings. She flopped down on the canopy bed and caressed the comforter before asking, “What’s in it for me?”

Beta Readers’ Favorite Lines and Scenes from Turn Card

1. The older woman looked like she’d taken a plunge off the backside of sixty-five and wasn’t too happy about it

2. “Hello, princess.” This time his smile lit up the room. “I’ve been expecting you.”

3. He took a deep breath, debating on how much he should tell her. “Call it fate.”
“Manipulation is a better word.”

4. She headed for the door and he should’ve let her walk away. Instead, he was like a launching grenade, slow to peak but explosive once he gathered her in his arms.

5. “I do get to walk away because that’s exactly what I did in Chicago. And if the roles had been reversed? I would’ve expected nothing less from you.”

6. “It’s early,” she replied. “And I heard something.”
“Probably that cat of yours.”
“He’s territorial.”
Kade inched closer. “He’s not the only one.”

7. “I still have time to decide.”
“Maybe, but at least play fair. Think about Kathleen and her happiness. Don’t make her wait for you if you already know that she could end up being the mistress you love but will never allow yourself to have.”
“I don’t like what you’re suggesting.”
“Neither do I,” Kade said. “Because it’s the truth.”

8. “It’s Blane. Did I interrupt something?”
Kade swore under his breath and nudged the Santini gunman with his foot. He had lost count of how many times Blane had “interrupted” something. “Yeah, big brother, as a matter of fact you did.”

9. Not every woman dreams of Prince Charming. He’s just the one who has enough money to buy his way to the top. It doesn’t mean he has enough charisma or appeal to stay there.”

10. “You’re gambling on the wrong girl, Kade.”
“And you’re going all-in on forever, are you?” Kade balked at that. “No worries, Blane. I know the lady belongs to my brother. But for now, she’s on my arm. You need to come to terms with that and let us do what we came here to do.”

11. Kade lowered his head and whispered, “Trust me, princess. If we browse for toys, I won’t be in the market for shiny little cars and wind-up dolls. You and I will shop for a different kind of plaything. And we’ll need a lot of batteries for what I have in mind.”

12. Blane grabbed Kade by the shoulders and threw him against the sofa like he weighed nothing. “You’re fucked now, little brother.”
Kade, smart-ass that he was, fired back, “No, fucked was last night.”

13. Blane was like an ox, driving forward with his head to Kade’s gut until Kade landed on the sofa with Blane topping him for another round of motorized-like punches. “You just couldn’t help yourself!”
“Oh I helped myself all right.”
“You bastard!” Blane hit him again.
Kade let him have a few in the beginning. After all, he deserved them. Now, he had no other choice but to fight back.

14. Perturbed by his casual mannerism after they’d made out in front of a lone audience, she bit out, “Sometimes I wonder how you go to sleep at night.”
“Easy…with your name on my lips.”
